Novice Public Forum Debate

Public Form is a style of debate where students debate in teams of two to "defend" or "negate" a set topic. Students debate the same topic for the duration of the course. In our novice and intermediate public forum courses, we work with students to build skills related to research, persuasive writing, thoughtful argumentation, and impromptu speaking. Students who are successful in public forum usually like diving deep into a specific topic, conducting research, and working with others. Students will be divided up into smaller groups based on their grade.

Public Speaking

Our novice public speaking courses are designed for students who want to build confidence as public speakers and gain exposure to competitive speech events. In our public speaking course, we start by building fundamental skills such as tone, presentation, and gesticulation, before moving onto preparing for competitive speech events. During the summer, students will be exposed to impromptu speeches, interpretative speeches, and persuasive speeches. Students will be divided up into smaller groups based on their grade.

Congress

Congress is a style of debate where students work as individuals to emulate the Congressional process. Students write resolutions and bills, research their own stances on legislation, and then work to persuade their peers to support their position through speeches. In our novice congress courses, we work with students to build research skills, increase their understanding of how laws are written and enforced, and practice persuasive speaking. Students who are successful in Congress usually like learning a little bit about many different things, are comfortable working on their own, and have a knack for persuasion.

Showcases

Each summer session will culminate with a showcase. Families will be invited to join in on the fun as spectators. For Congress and Public Speaking, the showcase will take place on the last day of class. For Public Forum, the showcase will take place the Friday following the last class. Public Forum debaters will be able to sign up to debate during the time slots that work best for them where they will then face off against another team.
